ABOUT US

Fillmore Citrus Fruit Association
On January 29, 1897, the Articles of Incorporation were filed with the Ventura County Clerk's office. A
new corporation , the Fillmore Citrus Fruit Association was launched. Who led the call for a cooperative
marketing among the area's citrus producers is unknown. Perhaps it was Dr. J.P. Hinckley, not only a citrus
grower but the only doctor in Fillmore at the time. Maybe it was James Walker who planted several acres of
Navel oranges. It could have also been David Felsenthal or J.W. Guiberson,  Maybe H.M. Walker, Guy
Goodrich or J.R. McKee. Each of these men were original incorporators.
In 1911, boxes of lemons are hauled from a 68-acre orchard on the northeast corner of A Street and Sespe Avenue. In the late 1890's or the early 1900's a wagonload of citrus is stacked onto a Southern Pacific boxcar for shipment. This 1923 photo shows Piru Citrus Associations 4 year old packinghouse at Main St. and Telegraph Rd. in Piru.

Piru Citrus Association

In 1914, led by David Felsenthal and C.S. Johnson, members of the Fillmore Citrus Association broke
away and formed the Piru Citrus Association. Felsenthal was named president and Johnson manager.
It would be 57 years before these two companies would merge to become the Fillmore-Piru Citrus
Association.
